The Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to build a career in the automotive industry. This programme prepares you to service and repair light vehicles such as cars and vans, working in dealerships or independent garages.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in a motor vehicle workshop while receiving structured training at ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ. The course typically lasts 36 months and combines hands-on experience with technical learning, helping you develop the skills needed to diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and deliver excellent customer service

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of vehicle systems including engines, brakes, suspension, steering, and electrical components. You’ll learn how to carry out routine servicing, inspections, diagnostics, and complex repairs using industry-standard tools and techniques.

The course also covers health and safety, environmental regulations, customer communication, and the use of diagnostic equipment. You’ll develop the ability to interpret technical information, follow repair procedures, and work to manufacturer specifications

There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in vehicle mechanics and a desire to work in the automotive industry. This programme is ideal for individuals who have completed a Level 2 qualification or have relevant experience in motor vehicle maintenance.

However, some employers may set their own entry requirements, such as GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above. If you have not yet achieved these, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ will support you throughout your training.

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.

At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

A practical skills assessment
A professional discussion
A multiple-choice knowledge test
These assessments are designed to confirm your competence and readiness to work independently as a qualified technician

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as a Motor Vehicle Technician, Diagnostic Technician, or Service Technician. You may also choose to progress to higher-level qualifications in automotive engineering or specialise in electric and hybrid vehicle systems.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a long-term career in the motor industry, with opportunities to work in dealerships, independent garages, or even start your own business.
