The Outdoor Activity Instructor Level 3 Apprenticeship is ideal for individuals who are passionate about the outdoors and want to inspire others through adventurous learning experiences. This programme prepares you to lead and deliver safe, engaging, and inclusive outdoor activity sessions for children and adults in a variety of settings.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in an outdoor education or adventure environment while receiving structured training at ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ. The course typically lasts 12 to 15 months and equips you with the skills to supervise, instruct, and support participants in activities such as climbing, canoeing, archery, bushcraft, and more

You’ll learn how to plan and deliver outdoor activity sessions that are safe, enjoyable, and tailored to the needs of your participants. This includes understanding group dynamics, managing risk, and adapting sessions to suit different ages, abilities, and environmental conditions.

The course also covers safeguarding, health and safety, environmental sustainability, and how to respond to incidents. You’ll develop strong communication and leadership skills, and learn how to evaluate sessions to support continuous improvement and participant development

There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Outdoor Activity Instructor Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in outdoor learning and a desire to work in a physically active and rewarding environment. This programme is ideal for individuals with some experience in outdoor activities or youth work.

However, some employers may set their own entry requirements, such as GCSEs in English and Maths. If you have not yet achieved a GCSE Grade 4/C (or equivalent) in these subjects, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ will support you throughout your training

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.

At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

A practical observation of a session you deliver
A professional discussion based on your portfolio
A knowledge test to assess your understanding of the role and responsibilities

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as an Outdoor Activity Instructor, Multi-Activity Leader, Environmental Education Tutor, or Ranger. You may also choose to progress to a Level 4 Outdoor Learning Specialist Apprenticeship or pursue further qualifications in education, youth work, or outdoor leadership.

This apprenticeship opens the door to a fulfilling career in outdoor education, adventure tourism, or environmental engagement.
